3 Important Lessons On Finding Balance In Life

Simply + Fiercely

Over the past few years, I’ve learned a lot about finding balance in life.  It turns out that motherhood and self-employment are great teachers. With both come seemingly endless demands, and it can feel impossible to keep up.

The older I get, the more I believe that we can make time for the things that matter. We can create balance in life—but the problem is that most of us are going about it all wrong.

If the weight of the world feels heavy on your shoulders, hopefully something in this story will help to lighten your load. Here are three important lessons I’ve learned about finding balance.

Sometimes important things need to sit on the backburner for a while. You don’t have to keep all of your balls in the air at once. It’s OK to put some of them down for a while.

Lesson #1: Accept That Balance Doesn’t Look Like “Balance”

Practically speaking, this means that sometimes I work 14 hours days in order to meet a deadline while dirty dishes pile in the sink. Other times, I enjoy long lunches with friends and completely ignore my inbox.

It’s not about how much you do. Instead, it’s how you feel about what you’re doing. You must make peace with your limits if you want to have any hope of finding balance.

Lesson #2: Realise Balance is a State of Mind

In a sense, it’s about making a decision. You must give yourself permission to make tough choices.

Deep down, on some level, you know what you need most right now—and if you’re able to align your life with those priorities, you’ll feel balanced.

Lesson #3: Realise That Balance Comes From Being True to Yourself
